In 1980, New York Telephone's local service was a bundled service that came with a phone, 6 free directory assistance calls (or a $.30 credit if the calls were used), the wire in the home and measured local service with a $4.00 call allowance an time of day discounts; 65% for night and 35% for evening. Local service also came with a rotary telephone and the total was about $10.00 nationwide. (We removed the phone rental for this analysis)

In fact, in most states, the cost of local service came with unlimited local service, unlimited directory assistance, the wire and the phone for about $10.00.

Starting in 1982 with the break up of AT&T, all services became 'deregulated'. Directory assistance is now $1.50 each counting tax, the inside wiring is now $7.99, the "FCC Line Charge" was added, and was taxed Universal Service. There is no longer any calling allowance and there are no more time of day discounts. Taxes, fees and surcharges increased as well as new ones were added to the bill.
